Dr. Nadine Collins, women’s leadership expert, author and empowerment coach, spoke for Southwestern Adventist University’s annual convocation ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Held at the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, the convocation marks the official beginning of the academic year for the university.

The ceremony started as organist Jonathan Mamora played and professors and administrators entered in colorful academic robes.  Pastor Anthony Lyder, associate pastor for Young Adult Ministry at Keene SDA Church, offered the invocation and was followed by the anthem “Nearer Still Nearer” performed by the Southwestern Chamber Orchestra.

University president Ana Patterson welcomed students. “Education is the highest form of searching for God…The search for God should never end,” she said.

Dr. Marcel Sargeant, vice president for institutional research & effectiveness introduced the speaker. This was followed by the Southwestern University Singers, who sang “Soon We Will Be Done.”

Collins’ message followed the theme “Prayer, Purpose & A Plan,” and told of her own experience as a struggling student. “When you are aligned with the true purpose of God’s calling,” she said, “it has the power to transform your life.”

“Fear can become your slave, can do the work for you. Fear nudges me. Fear pushes me.”

“Answering that call can be the first step in responding to what God has for you. When it comes to God, nothing gets wasted.”

The dedicatory prayer by Elder Russ Laughlin, vice president of spiritual development, concluded the program.
